About your new role

PLEASE NOTE: This role is not on the list of occupations eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route

The Product and Innovation team at Weightmans works to improve how legal services are delivered by using technology, data and smarter ways of working. The team supports lawyers and clients by developing practical tools and solutions in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment, offering a great opportunity to learn new skills and be involved in innovation within a law firm.

This is an entry‑level role within a professional services setting, designed for someone looking to build a career in innovation. You’ll learn the fundamentals of legal innovation and gain hands‑on experience, supporting the team with the delivery and implementation of product and innovation initiatives across the firm and for our clients.

What would a week look like?

There is no ‘usual’ week in our world, but the types of things you would be doing in this role include:

  • Engaging with stakeholders by attending workshops and innovation sessions
  • Helping to research ideas and generally reading round and exploring new subjects
  • Being a point of contact for innovation and product queries
  • Understanding product and innovation processes by being involved in scoping, defining, running and reporting back on proof of concepts and innovation projects.
  • Undertaking research into tech and client markets
  • Getting to grips with the technology we have and completing self study qualifications
  • Attending conferences and webinars and sharing what you have learnt
  • Studying for a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt qualification
  • This list is not intended to be exhaustive and you will be required to perform other duties and have other responsibilities that fall within the wider remit of the role.

Wha t does this role lead to?

On successful completion of a Lean Six Sigma Green belt, qualifications in our existing technology and probation, colleagues in this role are then eligible for promotion (subject to business need) to the role of ‘Legal Engineer’ where they will get the opportunity to put into practice their knowledge with responsibility for discrete tasks.

About You

As the role is varied, we are looking for you to have the following : -
  • An awareness and understanding of developments in technology.
  • You don’t need to be able to code, but you do need to be interested in how technology could assist with the delivery of legal services.
  • Good time management and prioritisation skills
  •  There is no time recording in this role so you will need to be comfortable planning your work out.
  •  You will need to be comfortable liaising with colleagues to help with prioritisation of your tasks.
  •  Creative thinker with the ability to engage with users to bring ideas to life.
  • You need a growth mindset to succeed in this role, willing to try new things and hear new approaches.
  •  You need to recognise there is often more than one way of solving something and be able to engage with people with conflicting viewpoints.
  •  Good communicator.
  • This includes written and verbal communication. The ability to listen well is also important.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Ok with failure.
  • There will be things we try that don’t work. We need to understand why and move on.
